Filming Day 3 - Costume, Hair & Makeup

emzj12's outfit day 3 album on Photobucket

Today's filming consisted of one of our chorus shots including both Louis and myself. I went for a casual but quirky look as it differed but went well with my outfit from day 1 of filming at Ladbroke Grove. Louis also dressed casually as he's just someone i notice as he passes by me.

Production- Weather check-Day 3 of filming

Production- Plan and Aim for day 3 of filming

Today we will be filming in Camden, we are hoping that Camden will be abit busy today because we shots of the public involved with the artist.

The Aim

  1. We want shots of the artist (Emily) to walk through the crowd singing. The reason for us doing this is because we want this scene to look realistic and not staged. However the problem with filming in a crowed is that we may not be able to ask for permission from everyone, and some people may make eye contact with the camera.
  2. We also need a full base track of the artist because the plan is get a base track on every Location we do
  3. A shot of the actor (Louis) in the crowed. for example buying something in Camden market and he makes contact with the artist.
  4. We need more long shots of the artist
  5. Unfortunatly we didn't get to try the 360 shot last flming session because we ran out of time but hopefully we will get the chance today

Production- Plan and aim for day 2 of filming

Tomorrow we plan to film in Dalston using an ally way (Dalston curve). we are hoping to find a wide allyway where its not too busy and not too quiet.

The aim
  1. get a long shot of both actors Emily and Louis walking past each other
  2. more close ups of the performer
  3. try the 360 degree shot of the performer (only holding the camera)
  4. get a full basetrack of the performer in the location

Production-Weather check for day 2 of filming

Planning- Another possible Location

                                                                     Another Possible Location

On our way home we came across an alleyway in Sheperds Bush that could be used for one of shots in our video. We really liked this location because it goes with the mise en scnen that we wanted in our opening shot of the performer. For the opening shot we wanted the artist to walk down a quiet ally way where she walks past the 'perfect stranger' and we felt that this alley way is wide enough and has the urban look.

We have already chosen a location to do the shot (dalston curve) for our second day of filming but this is just an option just inase things dont go as plan. Either way it would still be a good idea to do a base track in this Location for extra footage.

A few things to consider;
  • at the back of the allyway there was a number of workers so maybe there is a work site at the back that we may need to stay clear of
  • it may be a priate property and this could stop us from filming
  • people may keep walking up and down and look into the camera.

Extra Location?

Canada Water - Towards Surrey Quays

On my way home today i went past this location which i thought our group could use if for whatever reason we're running short on footage/aren't too sure what to do for an extra basetrack etc. Although it doesn't straight away appear to be an urban/edgy location the simplicity is something that i think could make it fit in with our other locations quite well anyway. I think some long shots of the performer (me) walking around and some close ups of the performer singing whilst sitting on the bench would look quite good.

Strengths and weaknesses of test shots

Strengths

  • Gradually learning the lyrics
  • Making our artist feel more comfortable
  • Using different angles
  • Using different technologies, for example filming while filming which gives us an advantage to look back on what and how to improve
Weaknesses
  • No eye contact while singing
  • Not a lot of mouth movement so it wasn't very clear for which part of the song she was actually singing
  • We didn't record in full base tracks
  • Didn't learn the lyrics before-hand

It was not neccassary to apply for a Film London permit because we are not from a perfessional filming company.
Instead we will get permission though Transpot for london because they provide student permits.

Research- Advice on 360 degree shot

For one of our shots we wanted to use a 360 degree shot of the performer, but unfortunalty we couldnt find a step by step on youtube on how to do it with the camera so we asked one of our teachers for advice.

From learning his we realised hat it would be hard to do the 360 degree shot ouside in the allyway as planned beause the surface wouldnt be smooth.
one of the advice given was to do the 360 degree shot in a sudio where the ground should be smooth, however we will try both locations (the ally wy and a studio) to se which result was better.

Research- Permission to film in locations

As a group we realised that we made need permission to film in certain locations without dirution from the local authority.

we looked up on how to gain permission to film in these locations and came across this website;
film lodon agency

'Small or Large Film Crew?
For productions filming on London's public streets, in theory a 'small crew' is a crew of 5 people or fewer, using a handheld or (in some boroughs) a tripod camera. A small crew should be able to film on the street without obtaining permission, however legislation in this area is open to interpretation and if the local authority is not aware that you will be filming in the area there is a chance that you may be asked to stop.'

'Street Filming
Provided filming or photography does not cause an obstruction, there is no restriction to filming on London streets. No licence or any form of official permission is required.'

From this research we found that it was not neccassery to get permission from the local authorities because we are a small crew do a small film production that shoud not disrupt citizens. However we decided that it was better to get permission just incased we were asked.

A member of our group will do a application to gain permission for the locations required.

plan for monday 22nd

  1. For our next lesson we plan to do a lip syncing practice and edit it on final cut pro and matching it with the original song. our aim is to use more than one base track and put it all together.

2. the next aim  for that lesson is to practice the edits that we want to use; such as spilt screen and fast forwarding using the practice shots

3. we need to create a production schedule for filming.

Presenting Our Pitch

Prezi - Pitch

Risk Assesment

Location

  • Ensuring that equipment is being looked after when we are filming in busy places e.g. Central London and Camden.
  • Go out to film at times when the location wont be too busy but not empty either.
  • Make sure that were constantly keeping an eye on equipment when travelling to our filming locations.
  • Ask for permission for filming when required.
  Weather

  • Check the weather before we go out to film, firstly to make sure our shots come out right and so we don't damage the equipment e.g. in the rain.

What the Public Expect from Dubstep Genre Music Videos

Monday, 15 October 2012

Pitch: Question 6

What would a big fan of music videos from this genre expect to find in your video?

When talking to fans about what they expect in a dubstep music video i started with location, many said they always expect an urban feel to the video with urban scenery etc. They also said that a club scene or warehouse party is a regular feature of dubstep music videos. In terms of performance the performer is usually singing to the camera while moving e.g. walking around and not standing still. They also expect the style to be modern and edited to the beat.

Pitch Q4: Influences For Final Planning

Where did you gt your ideas for your video from? You must refer to existing videos that have influenced your choices.

Before deciding on an initial plan for our video we listed some concepts/transitions we liked or wanted to include in our video. We then looked for existing videos for influence in the same genre as ours that used these concepts:
  •          Close ups/side shots/low and high shots
  •          Match cuts
  •          Split screen
  •         Slow motion
  •          Mirror reflection
  •          Dark lighting creating shadows
  •          Flashing/fast shots
  •          180/360
  •      Blur/out of focus
These are only some of the videos we looked for as for influence:

The concept of fast forwarding and rewinding is something that we want to incorporate into out work. As a group we feel that because our choice of song is quite up-beat the fast forwarding rewinding would compliment it very well and would set the pace of our music video. Also it is a way of showing the variety of technical skills we have picked up. The mise en scene in the video, especially consume is another thing we want to interpret in our own way as we already know that our artist will be dressed in very casual-every day wear relating to the target audience.

The use of repeated shots and base tracks is another thing that stood out that we may want to use in our own remake. Also they way they promote the artists making it obvious who the main focus is by showing close up's and parts of her face.

The use of split screen and editing is a very interesting aspect that could work with this genre of music because of the pace and they way we interpret it.

Pitch: Locations

These are some pictures of the locations around Dalston which we have chose to use in our music video.

We thought the graffiti would make a great shot because it gives a real urban feel and a colourful background which we wanted in our music video.

We have planned to use an alley way in our music video to shoot the performer walking down. This alley in Dalston is perfect because it looks very industrial and urban which we wanted.

This is Dalston curve garden it has great potential for shots which we could use in our music video and is right next to other locations where we have planned to film.

While i was in the area i took some pictures of other locations which we could also consider using in our video like this picture next to the railway track.

I also came across Dalston market which i think we could use to create some very powerful shots. In our storyboard we planned to have a shot in a busy place with people walking by and the performer in the middle we originally were going to use somewhere in central London. However i think that we could use Dalston Market for this shot and possibly more.
This is an alley way which comes of Dalston Market which we could also consider using.

pitch- question 8

We would like our artist to be signed to a Major record company and we have chosen Sony music entertainment: Columbia. We believe that a major record company can give our artists the maximum support that would make them successful and well known. Because Sony music entertainment is a well known label we feel that it would give out artist a good amount of production funding that will help promote the artist be having a good video and good studio equipment needed to make a high quality track.

We also believe that Columbia records will give our artist advice and support on image, advice on songs and promotion. With their advice and guidance we feel that our artist music will be in the market sooner and will be well known.

Columbia records is an American record label which can be good for the artist because they can be more diverse with their music producing. Also a majority of American artists are well known internationally so hopefully our artist will have a wider audience which will be good for touring.

Artists that are currently signed under Columbia Records are; Alexis Jordan, Areosmith, magnetic man, Bow wow, Susan Boyle, Calvin Harris etc.

Artists that are signed to Columbia Records That are similar to our artists are Magnetic Man and Calvin Harris. The main similarity between them is that their all UK artists and are included in the same Genre of music.

We want our song to mainly available for Internet download and through the use of itunes. This is because there is a large amount of consumers downloading music online, also because of our target audience we feel it will be easier for them to download on the Internet whether at home or on the go.

Pitch Q7: How We're Following Goodwins Theory

Briefly outline how your video follows Goodwin's theory on music video (narrative, performance or image) and how you feel this will appeal to your audience.

Our chosen music video follows Goodwin’s theory on a narrative basis. We thought it would be best to create the music video by amplifying and illustrating the lyrics and maybe interpreting it in a different way than the literal meaning. We truly believe that this will help enhance the audience’s already existing knowledge on the lyrics. Also by choosing to amplify and illustrate the lyrics, the scenario we are creating in our music video will come across as more realistic and this will allow the viewer to connect with the video and vice verca. Similarly by doing this, we are portraying the way we want our video to be depicted but also leaving some aspects to their imagination as maybe it’s something they've been through or understand in a different manner to how we've created it.  Therefore, we feel this will appeal to our audience as already said, it will relate to them on a personal level and the edits/transitions we want to use we feel will help emphasize the amplification and illustration of our video and keep our audience interested and engaged.

Research for Audience

research

For research we looked at fan sites, the artists official website and similar artits to draw an idea on what the average audience for our video will be like?

fansite

 Nia
Location- UK
Spare time- play games such as sims and go concerts
preferred genre of music-house, dubstep, funky, uk garage

genre fans questions
question/answer

on a fansite a question was asked on how fans get there music and what site the use, one of the response was 'soundcloud'. This may be a website than fans use to distribute and consume music.

The artist website
on Katy B's facebook we get a clear idea on who her fans are and what they are interested in due to comments and likes.

when looking at the artits website we realised that majority of the people liking and commenting on her post were mainly male and from outside the UK.
after looking at the artists facebok account i was able to connet to one of her fans face book account to see what hes interested in; Kleber is interested in Ne-yo, guter hero, christiano Ronaldo, Manchester united, weight training etc

pitch question 5

Core Audience.
We feel that our music genre should appeal to young adults between the age of 15 and 18. Our video shoud appeal to them because of the fast, up-beat tempo that comes with the genre, and dubstep music is mainly played in clubs.
The mise en scene and props will appeal to our core audience because of clothing and location. The clothing that we have chosen to use in our video will be casual everday clothing were young people can relate to. Causual and trendy costume/clothing will appeal to our core audience because the youth loves to keep up with the latests fashion. As for where we have chosen to set our video will hopefullt appeal to our target audience because we have chosen urban locations.
we hope our editing to appeal to our audience because we plan to use a range of editing techniques, such as editing with the same pace as the beat of our song.
An example of average audience

Micheal oliver
                     https://twitter.com/Micheal_1B

Wider Audience
Although dubstep first started in south london, we will like our video to have a wider range of audience and relate to more people.
Looking at Katy B's official facebook page we found that majority of her listeners and fans are groufrom outside of london and western european countries, so hopefully our video will appeal to their standards of dubstep music.
Our video can appeal to a more wider audience in terms of a ower age because of the lyrics of the song, as it talks about meeting someone new and liking them.
The original artist and our performer are both female, however a majority of Katy B music appeals to the male audience compared to female so we want our video to have the same amount of famale listeners as males.

Pitch - Question 2

Introducing our song:

The song we have chosen to make a music video for is Perfect Stranger by Katy B which falls under the dub step genre. The original video is set in an eastern European country (Kosovo/Romania) and is in black and white.  The music video follows all three of Goodwin’s ideas on relation between song and performance; illustration, because the audience sees who Katy B is regarding as this “perfect stranger”, amplification, because when Katy B and the stranger meet she is hesitant and pulls away from him which questions the title of “perfect” and disjuncture because the whole street scene with fire brigades and her fighting with a male are things that don’t come to mind when listening to the lyrics and there is little connection.

How our video will be different:

The main reason our video will be different from the original is because it is going to be in colour rather than black and white.  Our aim is to have loads of different shots and effects such as 360 shots and re-wind’s. Our locations are following quite an urban/edgy feel such as graffiti /brick walls, alleyways. Our relation between the song and the video will link more to illustration and amplification because the story behind our video will be based on the main character finding her “perfect stranger”.

Picth Q1: Sum Up Your Video

Sum up your video in one sentence:

She's invisible through his eyes until the end.

Research: Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey is a feminist who came up with the theory of 'The Male Gaze'. The concept of the Gaze is how the audience view the people presented. Mulvey coined the term 'Male Gaze' in 1975. She believes that film audiences have to view the characters through the eyes of a hetro-sexual male.

Features of the 'Male Gaze'
The camera lingers on the curves of the female body, and events which occur to women are presented largely in the context to a mans reaction to these events. Relegates women to the status of objects. The female viewer must experience the narrative secondarily, by identification with the male.

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

Research: Previous Student Work

Research: Carol Vernalis

After reading articles on her ideas of editing and camera work in music videos the main points she uses are:
    •    Edits in music videos come much more frequently than in film.
    •    Many of these edits stand out as disjunctures.
    •    Editing seems to have a rhythmic basis closely connected to the song.
    •    The usual rules of ‘continuity’ editing (editing usually found in classic broadcast fiction) are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen.
    •    The usual rules of ‘continuity’ editing (editing usually found in classic broadcast fiction) are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen.
    •    Jump cuts are often used.
    •    A master shot (base track) is frequently used to give the video a structure.
    •    The Camera may move in time with the music itself.

D Double E - Street Fighter Riddim
The editing for this video is very obvious when you first see 'D Double E' he appears as if he has been created by pixels. There are a series of wipes and dissolves used in order to string each shot together, this relates back to Carol Vernalis fith point.

Wretch 32 ft. Example- Unorthodox- The editing in this is very fast pace and frequently uses different shots. Carol Vernalis first point relates to this video, from 0.50-1.13 there are around 30 different shots seen over this time period.

Example- Kickstarts- The video starts with the editing on a rhythmic base created by the actors moving in time with the music e.g. from 0.00 - 0.15, the actors in the video are taping their feet in time with the beat this reflects Vernalis's third point.

Research: Andrew Goodwins Theory

Goodwin is a significant theorist for music videos. He explains six key features in his theory.

  1. Genre Characteristics - The genre of the music fits with the theme of the music video. For example a rock band performing at a gig, or an R&B artist in a club.
  2. Lyrics and Visuals - Lyrics fit with the image on the screen whether illustrate, amplify or contradict the lyrics.
  3. Music and Visuals - The pace, atmosphere and tone of the visuals have a relationship with the music, whether the illustrate, amplify or contradict the style.
  4. Close Ups - Close up of the artists and their motifs may feature across their work.
  5. Looking - There is a wide notion of 'looking' into mirrors, at the camera through direct address, at people etc.
  6. Intertextual References - From film, tv, programmes and other music videos etc. For example Marilyn Monroe in Madona video 'Material Girl'.

Research: Analysis of Music Video

Research: Main Functions of a Music Video

-->
What are the main functions of a music video?

-->
The main reason of a music video is to sell and promote the artist, a music video will help to add to an artists image etc.

A music video also helps the listener understand the song and lyrics more through using a narrative in the video. Certain lyrics of the song they wouldn’t have understood before will make much more sense. It also makes the song/video more memorable and more talked about between friends which will help song sell and bring the artist more fans.

A music video is not the artist singing into a camera they use diegetic sound and then lip sync in editing. When editing a music video they usually edit to the beat of the track, which can create a very powerful music video.

Common conventions used in music video:
·      Lip synching
·      Intersexuality
·      Fast paced editing
·      Special Effects
·      Costume
·      Storyline
·      Performance Concept
·      Close ups
·      Lyrics

Music Video Remake Review

I couldn’t get a hold of my summer remake video because it wasn’t put up on the blog. But our group chose to do Amarillo. Three things we could have improved was:
·         the lip syncing
·         the way we use of mise en scene ( use of props)
·         and use of editing

Three strengths:
·         use of camera and shots
·         filming within a limited time
·         use of lighting

Skills Audit

Looking back at my AS I realised that the research process is very important and is identifiable through your final outcome, reason for this is it shows whether or not you really thought about your initial plan and conducted professionalism. However I think that at the time we didn’t have that mind frame because of lack of time and planning. I felt that our research into mise en scene especially could have been thought out more carefully and would have made a big impact in our thriller. Looking at websites such as imdb and other trailers to get inspiration is something I believe we mastered, we did a lot of research on other films to get a feel of what was to come when making our story board and animatic.
This year on the other hand, I think because of the struggles we went through last year, the group is trying to be a lot more organised in our planning and research although we changed our song choice and couldn’t stick to one in particular, now that we have that we have a better idea of the shots, location and mise en scene.

Music Industry 2012

In 25 years, the music industry has moved from LPs to CDs to MP3s/iPods and so on.
Traditionally, record companies had full ownership of the music that was released by the artists and the artists was the one that went about, promoting and trying to sell their single/album as much as possible. However with a shift in society and modernization record companies were witnessing a fall in their profit. Consumers are now more active when it comes to the use of the internet and this has introduced many different sites as to where you can download music instead of purchasing a physical copy which people used to do back in the day. Throwing a demo or single up on a social networking site proves to grab a lot more people’s attention and also consumers are able to hear the music through TV and radio so the physical ‘cd’ of the artist has lost its true meaning.

Technical skills developed during AS

At the beginning of AS I had very little knowledge in using macs and the programmes that come with it. But as the months went past my skills expanded over time and now I can say I now know how participate in making a short film/clip and edit it using transitions and sound effects. Using programmes such as QuickTime, Movie Final Cut pro, Soundtrack Pro took a long time to get used to but helped in the long run when wanted to:

·         Importing and exporting files

·         Print screening

·         Editing in final cut pro

·         Making a new soundtrack in sound track pro

·         Using the camera and transferring files onto the mac

I can now use these skills during my time in A2 and develop them at an even higher level.

Review of Student Work

I viewed many student works and the first video that drew my attention was the remake of Florence and the Machine. This really intrigued me from the first minute it started. This was because of the use of lighting, location and fast paced editing.  You can tell that this group thought long and hard about how to go about this remake and in the end produced an amazing video.
The effects used emphasised the pace of the video and contracted the flashing/bright lighting used. The ‘warning’ message at the beginning of the video was also another aspect that stood out to me; the fact that they thought about the viewer made it seem that much more professional and you can tell that they took it very seriously. In addition the use of repeated scenes and slow motion is something that I really liked as it was thought it very carefully and made the video flow.

Youtube Tutorial: Multiclip

Above is a youtube tutorial that i've just watched for an editing technique called "multiclip", its pretty much a short cut for selecting when you want specific parts of each basetrack to play. I thought watching some youtube tutorials might be a quick and easy way to learn new tips and tricks that can help my own group when we get to putting our own footage together. One thing i had to look out for was that the version of Final Cut Pro was the same in the tutorial as the one we have to use at college because there are millions of tutorials for the same thing available for all sorts of software!

LYRICS

I didn't have to turn a around
I can feel him in back of my brain
When I step into the crowd
Something told me that I'd meet you today
Your energy when you touch me
Lifted me off the ground
Your words to me are like music

I don't know (I don't know)
Who you are (who you are)
All I really know is there's something your heart
That makes me feel (me feel)
It's a new start (it's a new start)
All I really know is there's something your heart

Are you from another world
I never seen someone who looks like you
Beautiful stranger how do you do?
Tell me is there something I can do for you
Your energy when you touch me
Lifted me off the ground
Your words to me are like music

I don't know (don't know)
Who you are (who you are)
All I really know is there's something your heart
That makes me feel (makes me feel)
It's a new start (it's a new start)
All I really know is there's something your heart

Something, something, something (3x)
Oh theres something, theres something I can see it there

How our music video will be different:

The main reason as to how our music video will differ from the original one is our video will be in colour rather than black and white. Our group's aim is to follow a completely different narative than in the original video by relating it more to the lyrics and following the idea of finding a "perfect stranger" with small motifs such as question marks until the stranger is revealed at the end and filming the video in a way that makes it seem like the main character is searching for this person throughout. (These are initial ideas).

Final Song Choice

Shortlist of Songs - Initial Ideas

The genre that we looked at was dubstep/r&b, this was because we thought it would be easier to edit to the beat and because of this its a genre that will enable us to create a really good video.

The list of songs were:

  • Nneka - Heartbeat
  • Angel - Wonderful
  • Calvin Harris - Sweet Nothing
  • Professor Green - Read All About It
  • Calvin Harris - Flashback
  • Katy B - Broken Record, Easy Please Me, Go Away & Perfect Stranger

reflection in progress

Skills Audit;

Looking back at my As year when we did a thrilere opening my research and planning skills was less developed compared to now. My group had an idea to rent a garage/shed to film a scene but because of lack of planning and research as to where we was alvaible to rent a shed led to a poor outcome. Because we didnt research other alternatives in stead of a garage we ended up filming this scene in one of the classrooms, which made the scene unrealistic because it didnt fit our genre.

However so far with research for our Advanced prtfoloio i felt that we went into much more detail.such as research of what the music industry is all about and how it works, the Changes of the music industry and looking at previous work.

A research that was completly new to me and i found very to relate our reasch back to was looking at music Theories. last year we didnt do theory work so when i did it this year and i found it very interesting.

Forms of research used So far;
  • Youtube
  • Google
  • Vimeo
  • Muvids
