Favourite previous student work

.

This is video has to be my favourite simply because their editing skills was so direct and matched perfectly with their chosen song. This groups song was called 'Fallen' and i was made clear who there intended target audience was; teenagers.

The main narrative for the video was a about a girl being heart broken. they showed this very well through the use of base tracks, mise en scene and lighting. first of all they have a large amount of base tracks used to put this video together which i thought was fantastic because it clearly made it easier for them to edit on the beat through out the whole video, this also first directly with the genre of their song (dub step). For the more base tracks that they used showed how she was heart broken.

Secondly their use of mise en scene was also done well, as the different locations really showed how well it was thought and panned for. Props used in this video made a significant stand out, for example the use of the black wings is continuously showed through out as he audience always remembered it, it is also puts forward the idea of a fallen angel which links to the title 'fallen'. another thing i also liked with their element of mise en scene is the use of birds because it signifies love. also the idea of writing key words down it catches the audience attention.

Thirdly their editing skills was impressive for me as the shots where cut directly on the beat. Other forms of editing were used such as slow motion i.e slow motion of the cars and birds flying, black and white edit for all of the shots. the black and white edit stood out more because it was strong because of the lighting that they used was creative.

Finally i felt that they challenged Mulveys theory by having no exploitation of the female body.

Music industry

The music industry has changed sifnificantky in the last 10 years.

Production
The production process has changed in the music such before the label would controll the music making prococess but now an artist can do this themselves with advanced technology avaiable

Distribution

The distribution process before was that labels would distribute physical copes for fans, such as casets or records or CD's; this was considerd anoulge. also to view the video the audience would have to wait for the video to be avaible on tv, channels such as MTV. However that is not the case today, majority of songs are sold digitally or downloaded by consumers illegally and people could stram music online.

Exchange

The exchange exchange process before was that the labels was recieving the money because products was being bought and hat was the only way to consume then. However currenlty since the internet was created  and the illegal download has ben increasing, labels and artists are making less money.

Laura Mulvey

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

Mulvey's Main Ideas on Representation

Example Video: Dizzee Rascal - Holiday

  • She thinks there is a very high sexual inequality in music videos e.g. women in bikinis/revealing clothes/heavy makeup and that women are portrayed in such a way intentionally.
  • These representations of women occur mainly in R&B, Grime and Rap music videos.

I agree that Mulvey's theory is still relevant today as music videos that are being released now still incorporate these representations.

A female artist who i think challenges Laura Mulvey's theory is Adele as i can't think of any of her music videos in which she is revealing her body to catch attention however a lot of makeup is still used to give the impression that she is flawless. Another reason that she challenges the theory is because she sings music from a different genre to R&B, Grime and Rap.

Exemplar Videos Following Vernallis' Main Ideas

Kelly Rowland Ft. Lil Wayne - Motivation

This music video follows Vernallis' idea on using a basetracks to give it some structure.

Beyonce - Run The World

This music video shows a good use of jump cuts, keeping it interesting to watch.

The Wanted - Glad You Came

This video is a good example for showing how the camera sometimes moves in time with the song.

research: The functions of a music video

The functions of a music video are;

1-to sell the song and promote the artist
2-give the listener a visual understanding of the song using narrative
3-to entain listeners and fans
4-visual repreentation of artist
5- promote song so viwers can buy album
6- evoke emotion to audience e.g. black eye peas 'where is the love'

However some videos do promot products, for example Lady Gaga's single 'telephone' and shots of virgin phone and cocoa cola

Analysis Of Best Music Video’s

Jay Z - 99 problems:
I chose these two video’s for different reasons, but still consider them to be the best example of the music video form. The first music video I chose was Jay z’s ‘99 problem’s’. Reason being, because the black and white filter that is used suggesting the struggle that jay z goes through on a daily basis hence the title name ’99 problems’ and the fact that it is also filmed in his home time in this society considered as the ‘hood’. I like the fact that they use a lot of jump cuts throughout the music video and that every scene introduces us to something different and that the barely repeat any shots. Similarly towards the end when he’s actually performing the song to a crowd showing off his talents and to he ends up getting shot and I liked how the gun shots were in time to the beat of the song.

Kid Cudi Ft Kanye West & Common - Make Her Say:
The second video I chose I was Kid Cudi’s ‘Make Her Say’ Featuring Kanye West and Common. I chose this music video because of the way it was edited into the horizontal split screen showing Kid Cudi and the other artist in different positions and the way it changes into different scenes/scenarios in time with the beat; instead of showing several jump cuts after each other. I also really liked the use of balloons at the beginning and at the end of the video even though it has nothing to do with the actual lyrical content of the song.
