Ancillary Research- class discussion

  1. Why are CD covers still used despite CD sales dropping?
Cd covers are still used for a number of reasons such as;
  • It promotes the artist
  • for devoted fans who prefer to buy physical copy rather than buy digitally
  • fans get a value for the money
  • Fans may feel more proud and connected because of the visual benefits that a Cd may have such as bonuses, additional information etc.
  • Cd covers still need artwork for digital downloads
  • it is a tradition for some genres to sell predominantly through CD/ digipack
  • sells unique selling point

   2. How important are Ancillary products to the artist and industry?
It may be more important and one way to promote the artist since CD sales are dropping, so the music industry may spend more money on producing Ancillary products to make it more appealing to buyers rather than digital copy.It also costs more money so the music industry can make more money. Another reason it may be of importance is because it may create a deep connection between artist and fan. The Ancillary product can be very useful for a new artist because it gets their faces out there and more well known. However it can also be seen as decreasingly important because the artist image can be promoted through other forms of media such as internet and magazines.

  3. How important is the music video in today's market?

I think its really important because there are sources out there such as YouTube that is available everywhere and it provides a wider audience for the artist and also promotes them. The more people that knows about the artist and song it increases the chances of people purchasing the album or singles on iTunes. Also the more views that an artist may have on YouTube gives the artist more recognition  The music video also creates a visual for the songs and the audience can feel more connected to song and artist. The music video itself creates representation and entertainment and engages viewer. Some artist may leak or release teaser trailers on YouTube to promote awareness of the song to fans so they can  expect and look forward to the release of the music video. For example Rihanna leaked a her song on YouTube for her fans, and although most people listened to it without a visual video she then showed pictures of behind the scenes of the music video, i.e her outfits so it excites her fans and make them want to see the video when it is released.
