Laura Mulvey

"In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly"

Mulvey's Main Ideas on Representation

Example Video: Dizzee Rascal - Holiday

  • She thinks there is a very high sexual inequality in music videos e.g. women in bikinis/revealing clothes/heavy makeup and that women are portrayed in such a way intentionally.
  • These representations of women occur mainly in R&B, Grime and Rap music videos.

I agree that Mulvey's theory is still relevant today as music videos that are being released now still incorporate these representations.

A female artist who i think challenges Laura Mulvey's theory is Adele as i can't think of any of her music videos in which she is revealing her body to catch attention however a lot of makeup is still used to give the impression that she is flawless. Another reason that she challenges the theory is because she sings music from a different genre to R&B, Grime and Rap.
